In his memoir titled Pageboy, actor and producer Elliot Page revealed that he had a “sexually open” relationship with his Juno co-star Olivia Thirbly.
The Oscar-winning star revealed that he was sharing a room with his mother while filming the movie in Vancouver, which “made it complicated when I met someone, the first woman I had a suitably consensual sexual relationship with.”
“I was taken aback the moment I saw Olivia Thirlby,” Page said.
“Embodied and bold, her long brown hair moved in slow motion,” he added.
“We were the same age, but she seemed so much older, capable, and centered.”
“Sexually open, far removed from where I was at the time.”
He continued: “But the chemistry was palpable, it pulled me in.”
Juno revolves around the character of Juno MacGuff, a sixteen-year-old high school student played by Page, who unexpectedly becomes pregnant after a one-time sexual encounter with her friend, Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera.
Thirbly portrayed Juno’s best friend, Leah.
On set, the actors’ romantic relationship started after Thirbly told Page: “I’m really attracted to you.”
Page responded, “Uh, I’m really attracted to you, too.”
“At that we started sucking face. It was on,” Page wrote.
“I had an all-encompassing desire for her, she made me want in a way that was new, hopeful… And we started having sex all the time: her hotel room, in our trailers at work, once in a tiny, private room in a restaurant.”
Elliot, who came out as a trans man in 2020, continued to say: “What were we thinking?”
“We thought we were subtle.”
“Being intimate with Olivia helped my shame dissipate.”
“I didn’t see a glint of it in her eyes and I wanted that — done feeling wretched about who I am.”
In 2011, Thirbly came out as bisexual, saying: “No one should have to hide their sexual orientation. Loving people is a necessary part of being human, and it is very difficult to love people in secret.”
“It’s a horrible thing to force people to do. And I am not 100% straight. … I’m so lucky to have a job where it’s okay for me not to be in the closet.”
