Pets are loyal companions who shower us with love, warmth, and endless adorable moments. But beneath their cuddly exteriors lies an undeniable truth: they are animals. No matter how domesticated they are, pets still have instincts rooted in survival.
Although rare, there have been chilling cases where beloved pets turned fatal. Either because of aggression or tragic circumstances, the incidents of pet dogs consuming their deceased owners highlight the line between cuddly and killer is thinner than we think.
A heartbreaking case of recent tragedy is of Adriana Neagoe, known as Anda Sasha, a 34-year-old woman from Romania. In January, 2025, she was found dead in her apartment, eaten by her pet pugs.
The Romanian woman shared a deep and affectionate bond with her two pet pugs. These tiny, lovable companions were her constant source of comfort and joy. Known for their affectionate and playful nature, pugs are often called “shadows”. Adriana’s pugs were no different. They adored her, always by her side, thriving on her attention and care. She often shared pictures and moments with them on social media, showcasing their playful antics and close bond.
Earlier this month, Adriana suddenly went silent. Friends and family grew concerned when she stopped responding to messages and calls. At first, they assumed she might have been busy, but worry turned into alarm when days passed with no sign of her. After five days of complete silence, her family called the authorities.
When police, along with firefighters and Adriana’s relative, forced their way into her apartment in Târgu Jiu, what they found was a grim and heartbreaking scene. Adriana was dead and her body had been partially consumed by her own beloved pugs. The small dogs, likely distressed and starving for days without food, had resorted to their natural instincts.
As of now, it still remains unclear whether she had suffered a sudden medical emergency or passed away under other circumstances. Officers shared it was apparent that the two dogs had already begun to feed on her body. However, the paramedics found no immediate signs of violence or forced entry, which rules out foul play.
Her body was transported to Gorj Forensic Medicine Service and an autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death. . Meanwhile, the pugs were taken into the care of local authorities. Police has launched an investigation and are considering all potential scenarios to determine what happened to Adriana
Her sister, Maria Alexandra, mourned her loss on social media, calling Adriana a “beautiful angel” and expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. While sharing the devastating news with family and friends through a Facebook post, she wrote,
“My beautiful sister Anda Sasha is no longer among us.”
Friends and acquaintances of the 34-year-old left heartfelt tributes under the post, with one person writing, “Condolences, I can’t believe it. I am so sorry.”
Another on said, “My deepest condolences to you! I am in shock! What happened to her?”
While a third one added, “I am devastated! May God protect her and give you the strength to overcome. Please let me know if I can help with anything. Condolences.”
According to the Daily Mail, the position in which she was found indicated signs of cadaveric lividity, also referred to as livor mortis. As per Osmosis, livor mortis occurs when blood settles in the lower or dependent parts of the body after death, causing a dark purple discoloration of the skin. However, the exact cause of death is still unknown.
While the thought of pets consuming their owners is horrifying but it’s not unheard of. Sadly, dogs, even the smallest and most affectionate breeds, can revert to their primal instincts when faced with extreme hunger.
