Reacher lead star Alan Ritchson has responded to complaints by some Christians against his on-screen naked scenes. The American actor, who publicly expressed Christianity, was attacked by some of the Christian community for portraying relationships outside of marriage.
Ritchson has portrayed Jack Reacher since 2022, a former U.S. Army military policeman who tours the United States dealing out justice and a bespectacled man. Adapted from the books of Lee Child, the series has enjoyed critical success along with praise for Ritchson’s work, along with its greatly energetic action content. Some Christians, however, have objected to the romantic sideplots of the show, protesting that it contradicts Ritchson’s publicly professed religious beliefs.

In a recent interview with GQ, Ritchson admitted he finds the backlash puzzling. He responded directly to the criticism, saying:
“I’m sorry—I doubt that’s going to be part of the conversation when I’m standing at the pearly gates!”
He expressed that while he understands that some people may feel strongly about the issue, he does not believe that portraying fictional characters in romantic relationships conflicts with his personal faith.
Ritchson has no qualms discussing his religion. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he talked about how Christian beliefs influence the manner in which he lives his life. He explained:
“I’m a Christian quite simply because of what Jesus calls us to do—love other people until death. It doesn’t mean we’re all to be hung on a cross, but how can I suffer for you?”
Although he firmly believes in his faith, Ritchson admitted he used to be afraid that if he spoke openly of his Christianity, it would cost him a spot in Hollywood. However, he remained committed to his faith, even when it does not always reflect the beliefs of every Christian member.

Ritchson further indicated that individuals find it challenging to distinguish actors from fictional characters. He thinks it is weird that some viewers want him to act just as the character is portrayed on screen. To rectify this, he stated:
“People have this weird affinity with fictional individuals and sort of relate that to the real human being. I don’t have a problem making that distinction. I get bashed a lot by Christians who say, ‘How dare you have an unmarried sex scene on TV and then talk about Jesus?'”
He emphasized that his religion is so intimate and personal to him and that he does not let outside perspectives guide his actions. While he respects other people’s opinions, he adheres to both his vocation and his belief system of kindness, love, and understanding.
While Reacher continues to build steam, Ritchson remains among the rising stars in Hollywood. He has already proven his ability to deal with the challenge of being a Christian and a successful film star. How he responded to the criticism is a sign that he is secure in himself—both as a Christian and as a professional artist.
Despite all the conflicts, one thing is sure: Ritchson is committed to his job, his morals, and himself—no matter what anyone else has to say.
