Viewers are binging a ‘must-watch’ crime series and declaring it one of the best.
Crime is a hugely popular TV genre and it’s one you will find on almost any streaming platform.
The constant change in pace keeps viewers hooked and wanting more, plus, such dramas usually focus on society and the sense of right and wrong.
One particular series has viewers addicted, with some admitting to rewatching all 75 episodes numerous times.
Fans can’t stop praising the crime program, with one penning: “This is one my all-time favorite shows! It’s not only one of the best shows currently on TV but it’s also just flat-out one of the best shows ever created!”
In agreement, a second enthuses: “Best show yet! Wonderful actor selection, and a wonderful plot!”
“The genius of this show is that it very, very gradually starts to deepen, uncovering layers to the main characters and slowly revealing their depths and complexities,” writes a third. “It does this so gradually that you don’t even realize it until realize you’re watching some of the most beautifully-drawn characters on TV for a long time.”
The crime series is based on a 2010 Australian film that only made $1 million at the box office, which in turn was inspired by subjects such as the criminal Pettingill family, per The Guardian.
The show’s developer, Jonathan Lisco, said (per USA Today): “I figured a lot of people had seen it (the movie), but as it turns out, practically no one in the States has.
“In some ways, that gave us a canvas to go deep on it, but we also wanted to keep the DNA of the movie intact.”
The TV series centers on a man (played by Peaky Blinders‘ Finn Cole) who decides to live with his grandmother following his mom’s death. His life takes another turn when he becomes involved with his cousins and their criminal activities.
Discussing the role of Cody, Cole said: “When he comes into this family, he’s persuaded to lower his defenses and to try and trust people and find where he belongs.
“He’s lacking that sense of belonging throughout the story, and we find out that he doesn’t really belong anywhere.”
Alongside Cole, the series stars Ellen Barkin, Scott Speedman, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Daniella Alonso, Molly Gordon, Carolina Guerra, Sohvi Rodriguez, Leila George, Jon Beavers, and Rigo Sanchez.
Executive producer John Wells approached filmmaker David Michôd about adapting Animal Kingdom for the small screen shortly following the film’s release. However, Michôd wouldn’t give his blessing until a few years later.
Director Lisco admitted that he was initially skeptical about the project, yet he saw its true potential after watching the movie.
He said: “The real DNA of the show was this powerful and perverse mother, and the hold she had over her four sons, which dripped with this s**ualized danger.”
