Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish, 23, reflected on a life-changing year while sitting down with Vanity Fair for her eighth annual interview.
Eilish dropped into her highs and revelations that make 2024 a chapter worth remembering for her for all the candidness and artistry.
Her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, finished up release in May 2024 and rivaled in popularity, marking the second most finished album on Spotify in history globally.
Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poet’s Department was the only other title to surpass it, with the lead single, “Birds of a Feather,” also ranking among the platform’s top-streamed tracks of the year.
Eilish and her brother Finneas celebrated a big moment in their careers beyond streaming milestones.
“What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie movie soundtrack won the duo their second Academy Award.
Their achievement cemented their place in history as some of the youngest artists to garner a raft of Oscars, as multiple wins showed resolve through their collaborative brilliance.
Eilish said her personal life also hit new heights in 2024, as her professional life blossomed.
She also described the year as one that was “filled with friendship,” and said she reconnected with old friends and made new ones that became real.
“The year has been nothing but making friends and getting so, so close with people I wasn’t close with before and getting close to people I used to be friends with again,” she said, reflecting on her year-long journey.
The singer also said that she had kept a personal promise she made in her 2023 Vanity Fair interview.
She had also said that she wanted to have good s** in the next year. And she said that with a bunch of humor laced with a whole bit of satisfaction, “Well I have had a lot of good s**, so… you’re welcome, Billie!” Being open about achieving it was a lighthearted relatable moment in the discussion.
Fans might applaud Eilish for her candor, but she’s also had to deal with the impossibly high level of public interest in her private life.
‘I wish no one knew anything about my s**uality or anything about my dating life,’ she told Vogue in an interview in November 2024. Ever, ever, ever. I hope that they never will again.”
Also this year, her road to self-discovery had some significant milestones.
In an earlier interview, Eilish also talked about how she came to understand her s**uality, saying: “I’ve been in love with girls my whole life; I just didn’t understand until last year.”
She likes authenticity but wants to have some boundaries and privacy about her personal things, as public conversation tends to spin out of control and become speculation.
Just as 2024 draws to a close, Eilish is exploring her adventurous side, saying she wants to go skydiving, stunt driving, and get more tattoos and piercings.
She never wavers from her path to personal growth and never wastes an opportunity to learn from an experience.
It was the last detail Eilish divulged in her interview, which had fans buzzing. Admitting candidly she had played up the possible professional or friendship elements of her 2024, but they were not the whole story by any means: ‘I also want a boyfriend.’
It’s been the first year that I’ve actually allowed myself to do what I wanted and it was great. ‘yes I’ve had a lot of good s**,” she said with a smile.
Billie Eilish’s artistry has never been stronger, and her personal life blooming, her story with it, blending honesty and ambition into her story.
With her journey into the future, she continues her resilience, discovery of herself, and remaining true to herself; something her fans all around the world can relate with.
