Kanye west, now officially known as Ye, is a popular name that hardly anybody wouldn’t heard of. He rose to fame in early 2000s because of his innovative production style and groundbreaking music.
One of the most famous rapper, fashion designer and entrepreneur, Kanye west, remains in the headlines for one reason or another.
Be it his relationship scandals with Julia Fox, or his one of the most talked divorce with Kim Kardashian, or his clothes with politically charged designs, or his recent marriage to Bianca Censori or his announcement for presidential run, Kanye West knows how to be in the spotlight and social media conversations.
And now it is “the change of name” that is keeping him in the frontlines.
Kanye first announced his intention to change his name in 2018. Three years later, he got his name officially changed to “Ye” after a Los Angeles judge approved his request of name change with no middle or last name.
He explains the word “Ye” has religious and personal significance to him. This word is commonly used in the biblical significance which represents a unifying concept, meaning “you” or “us”. He also mentioned “Ye” is a nickname he often used for himself.
Milo Yiannopoulos, rapper’s chief of staff, has advocated this change to be reflected universally. He has urged platforms and entities to use his new official name in all the mentions.
However, the rapper’s name is still used interchangeably and he himself has restated his request for people to stop calling him with his former name. He describes his old name as “slave man” and wants people to respect his chosen identity.
This stance has sparked discussions online with mixed reactions, yet many are in support of “Ye’s” new identity and his plea to be called with whatever name he prefers.
One of the users wrote: “Ye is embracing who he truly is, and I respect that. It’s a personal journey for him.”
Appreciating the biblical connection to his name, another one wrote, “Calling himself Ye is symbolic. It’s simple, universal, and deeply rooted in spirituality.”
Some people are taking hilarious takes on this. One user made lighted remark as “Can Ye believe it“
Following the release of his new eponymous album “Ye”, in 2018, Kanye wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “the being formally known as Kanye West” and concluded “I am YE.”
