Keanu Reeves is eager than ever to step back into the world of John Constantine.
The 60-year-old actor recently reunited with Constantine director Francis Lawrence on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary and to discuss updates on the long-awaited sequel.
Reeves and Lawrence confirmed that a script is in development, and they feel optimistic about the project’s progress once it’s completed.
Lawrence has wanted to make a sequel since the 2005 film’s release and explained that behind-the-scenes issues at Warner Bros. and DC Comics delayed progress.
He said, “We have constantly tried to come back.”
Despite the challenges, Reeves remains eager to reprise his cynical, demon-fighting exorcist role.
He admitted, “I’m aching to play this guy!”
Lawrence credited the film’s dedicated fanbase for reigniting interest in a sequel.
He also pointed to Reeves’ 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where the actor said Constantine was his top choice for a character revival.
Reeves shared at the time, “I would love to be John Constantine again. I’ve tried.”
This is not the first time Lawrence has spilt the beans on the status of the Constantine sequel.
Recently, he told Collider, “I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva [Goldsman, producer], Keanu and I are super, super excited about it.”
He added, “We have a great idea.”
“We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things.”
“I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling,” he added.
“But in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.”

The sequel was officially announced in 2022, with Reeves returning as the lead and Lawrence directing. Akiva Goldsman is writing the screenplay.
Adapted from DC Comics’ Hellblazer series, John Constantine is a cynical exorcist with the ability to communicate with supernatural entities and battle evil demons.
The original 2005 film, starring Keanu Reeves, grossed $200 million globally upon its release and has since built a devoted cult following, fueling demand for a sequel.
“You watch Constantine now and it STILL holds up,” one wrote.
“It aged very well. A sequel would be SO awesome.
“It really is amazing how this film has gained so much popularity over the past 20 years,” another added.
“I would loooooooooooove a sequel to Constantine! Let’s go Keanu!” a third optimistic fan chimed in.
