Lisa Montgomery, an American woman, convicted of a brutal murder of a pregnant lady, is now executed. In the United States, Montgomery is the only woman who was executed on the federal row for her horrific crime in the last 67 years.
As reported, Montgomery abducted an unborn child after murdering her mother, Bobbie Jo Stinnett, who was carrying the child in her womb at the time of death.
To lure the victim, Montgomery initially befriended the 23-year-old Bobbie. Montgomery bonded over dogs with the victim, Bobbie, she had met in an online chat room dedicated to pets. On the day when the heinous crime was committed, Montgomery contacted Bobbie with the pretense of buying a puppy.
Once she entered Bobbie’s house, Montgomery overpowered her and strangled her with a rope which made the victim Bobbie unconscious but alive. Montgomery cut open Bobbie’s womb with a kitchen knife she had brought with herself. During the horrific act, Bobbie regained consciousness and tried to fight back but passed away due to severe blood loss.
Montgomery took the baby girl and fled from the scene pretending the newborn was her own kid. She had faked pregnancies in the past as well. However, police arrested her the following day after discovering the victim’s body and tracing Montgomery through the online chats. Thankfully, the baby was found alive and was safely returned to the family.
Montgomery confessed to the murder and her fabrication was exposed. In legal proceedings, Montgomery was convicted of “kidnapping resulting in death” in 2007 and was given the death penalty. Her legal team argued about her mental state not being normal and mentioned her history of childhood abuse to save her capital punishment but the appeal was denied.
She was given a lethal injection at the federal prison in Indiana, becoming the first woman to be federally executed since 1953. Her execution proceeded after the US Supreme Court overturned a last-minute stay.
According to reports from the BBC, witnesses noted that Montgomery’s face mask was removed during the execution process.
Before her execution, she was asked if she had any words. This was the chance for her to show remorse but she performed the last defiant act – she simply responded “No”.
On the other hand, Montgomery’s lawyer, Kelley Henry condemned those involved in the execution of the culprit as the defense team argued about her mental illness due to the severe abuse she herself had been victim to.
Kelly said, “The government stopped at nothing in its zeal to kill this damaged and delusional woman. Lisa Montgomery’s execution was far from justice.
