Macaulay Culkin has sparked a heated debate online after sharing a Halloween costume that some social media users branded inappropriate.

The Home Alone actor dressed as a soldier for Halloween, recreating a famous internet meme.

While many fans recognized the reference and praised the costume, others criticized its appearance and questioned whether it was appropriate.

The disagreement spread across social media, with some commenters criticizing him but many others were defending Culkin’s choice.

The controversy has put the actor back in the spotlight, prompting renewed interest in his career, his life beyond childhood fame and the inspiration behind his Halloween look.

Who is Macaulay Culkin?

Macaulay Carson Culkin is an American actor who rose to international fame as one of the most successful child stars of the 1990s.

Born on August 26, 1980, in New York City, Culkin began performing at a young age. His father, Kit Culkin, was an actor who helped guide his early career, while his mother, Patricia Brentrup, raised him alongside his six siblings.

Culkin initially appeared in stage productions before moving into television and film. His early roles included appearances in Rocket Gibraltar and Uncle Buck, the latter of which helped establish him as a promising young performer.

However, it was his performance in the 1990 Christmas comedy Home Alone that transformed him into a household name.

Playing Kevin McCallister, a young boy accidentally left behind when his family travels for Christmas, Culkin charmed audiences with his comedic timing and resourceful character.

The film became a major box-office success and remains one of the most recognizable holiday movies of all time.

His career after Home Alone

Following the success of Home Alone, Culkin returned as Kevin in the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

He also starred in several other popular films during the early 1990s, including My Girl, The Good Son, The Pagemaster and Richie Rich.

Although his childhood career brought enormous fame, Culkin stepped away from acting in the mid-1990s. He later explained that he wanted to experience life outside the entertainment industry.

Culkin eventually returned to acting with more unconventional projects. He starred in the 2003 drama Party Monster, portraying club promoter Michael Alig, and appeared in the 2004 comedy Saved!.

He continued to take on occasional film and television roles, including an appearance in American Horror Story: Double Feature in 2021.

In 2023, Culkin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His former Home Alone co-star Catherine O’Hara attended the ceremony and celebrated his achievements.

Culkin has also joined the cast of Fallout for its second season, taking on a recurring role in the popular television adaptation of the video game franchise.

His family life away from the spotlight

Culkin has largely kept his personal life private throughout his adult career.

He is in a relationship with actress Brenda Song, whom he met while filming the 2019 movie Changeland. The couple have two children together and have occasionally spoken about their experiences as parents.

Despite his long association with Home Alone, Culkin has built a life beyond the character that made him famous.

He has also developed interests outside acting, including music and comedy. His willingness to pursue unconventional projects has helped him maintain a career without constantly relying on his childhood success.

Macaulay Culkin’s Halloween costume sparks backlash

The latest controversy began after Culkin shared a Halloween selfie recreating the famous “thousand-yard stare” soldier meme.

The actor wore military-style clothing, a helmet and dark green face paint. He also adopted the blank expression associated with the original image.

Culkin captioned the photograph: “War. War never changes. Happy Halloween y’all.”

The costume references American artist Tom Lea’s 1944 painting The 2,000 Yard Stare, which depicts a US Marine during the Battle of Peleliu in World War II.

The painting later inspired the “thousand-yard stare” meme, which people frequently use online to represent exhaustion, emotional distress or the feeling of mentally checking out.

However, not everyone recognized the historical reference behind Culkin’s costume.

Some social media users criticized the dark appearance of the makeup, with several suggesting that it resembled blackface. Others understood the reference but still considered the costume poorly timed given ongoing conflicts around the world.

One user wrote: “It’s not a blackface,” before adding that the costume was “kinda inappropriate and clueless considering how many war conflicts happening in the world today.”

Another commenter criticized the execution, writing: “I get what you were trying to do but this is by far the worst way to execute it.”

The criticism prompted other users to defend Culkin, pointing out that the makeup was intended to represent military camouflage and dirt rather than racial impersonation.

One supporter wrote: “It’s obviously green/olive paint that they use as camouflage.”

Another praised the actor’s recreation of the meme, calling it “a top tier Halloween costume.”

The disagreement largely centered on whether viewers recognized the original painting and its internet reinterpretation.

Culkin has not publicly addressed the criticism.

The controversy highlights how quickly a celebrity’s Halloween costume can become a subject of public debate, particularly when its intended reference is not immediately clear to everyone who sees it.
