She remembered the moment when she met someone who refused to choose between male or female identity.
“Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and s3xy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine,” she explained.
The experience taught her for the first time in her life that someone truly understood her authentic self.
“Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my s3xuality more,” she said.

“I was like, ‘Oh—that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.’”
Her individual discovery helped her understand herself better and produced unanticipated effects on her family members.
After watching The Voice her mother fell apart because a contestant credited Miley for bringing her the power to reveal her identity.
“My mom started crying,” Miley shared.
“She was like, ‘I’m so sorry about the way I was when you were that age and coming out.’”
Miley’s mother accepted her identity when she saw another young person experiencing these same challenges in their life.
This realization between them built their bond and resolved previous arguments between them.
