The Need for Speed franchise has a longer history than many may realize. Originating as a relatively obscure racer for PC and consoles almost 30 years ago in 1994, it has since blossomed into one of the most renowned racing franchises worldwide, for better or worse.

However, it is undeniable that this franchise has not reached its peak for quite some time. To give credit where it’s due, the recent release of Need for Speed Unbound has arguably revitalized the series, making it the strongest entry in years.

Since 2003 with the release of Need for Speed Underground, some argue that this iconic series has failed to reach its full potential. However, the arrival of its sequel just a year later marked a significant improvement in almost every aspect compared to its predecessor.

Need for Speed Underground 2 encompassed everything a gamer craved: seamless gameplay amidst neon-lit streets within the fictitious Bayview city, extensive customization options, an engaging storyline, and a truly remarkable soundtrack to top it all off.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve witnessed some impressive remasters, with Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered in 2020 being the most recent one. Consequently, it’s not surprising that fans have been eagerly hoping for the Underground games to receive a similar treatment. Although there are no indications of that happening at the moment, enthusiasts have taken to Reddit to express their affection for Underground 2.

“Nostalgic and best one of the franchise,” Redditor cable010 opened up the discussion on the thread. “Oh man, the first time hitting that nitrous and seeing the world streak up,” reminisced stylezLP. “I wanna mention that the original Most Wanted was a close 2nd to me behind this game.”

“It was a way more simple time back then, coming back to school with nothing to worry about except what’s for dinner & what mods I’m gonna deck my cars out with lol,” said a nostalgic Molotov320. “Still the best in the franchise in my opinion,” said cyanideh1gh.

The future of the series remains uncertain in the hands of Electronic Arts. Will we witness another thrilling addition to the franchise, or could it be that the cherished Need for Speed Underground or its sequel will be next in line for a remaster? Only time holds the answer to this enigmatic tale.
