A zombie show that refused to die after taking fans by storm in 2010, The Walking Dead was based on a comic book series where the dead were walking, quite literally. Pulling audiences into an apocalyptic reality where humanity is barely existing, this series revolved around a group of walkers struggling to stay alive. This literal hellscape gave birth to an entire franchise and fans are still not ready to get over any of them. The horror, gore, heart, and humanity, this series has it all.
However, the fan base has been switching sides amidst this new “chaos.” The Netflix series Black Summer has been taking over the charts by storm. This slow-burn story is delivering pure, raw survival skills like nothing seen before.
Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, Black Summer has Jaime King, Christine Lee, Sal Velez Jr., Justin Chu Cary, Kelsey Flower, Erika Hau, Gwynyth Walsh, Mustafa Alabssi, Edsson Morales, and Zoe Marlett. The story revolves around a mother separated from her daughter in the apocalyptic chaos. The survivors are human, terrified and real as we see their questionable choices and their inevitable deaths.
A viewer has boldly declared, “It’s better than The Walking Dead. Period.” Others have made sure the sentiments of the fans of other zombie apocalypse franchises aren’t hurt. “Really enjoyed this show. Great characters/tension [and] non-stop action.”
One fan agreed, saying, “This show is non-stop action—no filler, just edge-of-your-seat moments.”
Sorry walkers, but some have even called it “the best zombie show ever filmed, in my opinion.”
While the viewers are having fun comparing the two, the King Of Horror, Stephen King, has praised this new series online. Complimenting its fluid cinematography and minimalist dialogues, he wrote, “Showrunners could learn a lot from this.”
Kayla Cobb, a writer for Decider praised this show’s rawness and uniqueness. It “drills into terror” because “There’s no time for Shakespearean, Walking Dead-style monologues in the middle because you are running for your life.” Isn’t it really the urgency of a true apocalypse that is keeping us all hooked?
Continuing for two eight-episode seasons, fans were looking forward to a third one. A fan’s tweet read, “Season 3 of Black Summer or nah?” A disappointing news was confirmed by the show’s co-creator Hyams where he replied, “Sadly, nah.”
But hey, we still have two horror-filled seasons. Black Summer is chaotic, ideal for weekend binges and will definitely keep your toes curled. Happy binge-watching!
