The global fascination with the British royal family, its traditions, and protocols or controversies has been long.
The tension between the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has often been one of the buzziest tensions in recent years.
Beyond its image of unity, the monarchy has been exposed to internal conflicts in the past few years.
One of the most hotly debated incidents is the supposed fallout between Meghan and Kate in the run-up to the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding.

But for years, Meghan was painted as the villain in the media who had reduced Kate to tears over a row about flower girl dresses.
However, Meghan later disputed this claim, telling a different side of events and placing Kate as the center of the controversy.
Meghan directly addressed the rumors that she had made Kate cry during a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
“I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of [the fight], because she apologized. And I’ve forgiven her,” she said.
Meghan refused to go into specifics but clarified that the situation was unfairly spun against her.

“What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do, but that happened to me,” she added.
Meghan tried to explain what happened, but speculation about the famous argument continued.
However, the full details of the dispute were not revealed until Prince Harry released his memoir Spare.
From Harry’s account, he brings details that have never been seen before, the exact messages exchanged between Meghan and Kate before the wedding.

The book states that days before the wedding, Kate texted Meghan about worries surrounding Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress.

Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy, allegedly wrote Kate. She tried it on at home and cried,”
However, under the pressure of media interest in her father, Meghan suggested a practical solution.
But she told Kate that a tailor, Ajay, was available in the palace at Kensington from 8 am to make adjustments.
Meghan’s message read, “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8 a.m. here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”
Nevertheless, Kate is said to have advised that all the dresses be remade rather than altered, as per the advice of her own wedding dress designer.

The disagreement further heightened tensions, especially as Meghan was struggling to deal with the stress of the situation, along with her impending wedding.

Meghan asked Kate, at one point, whether she knew about the media frenzy over her father Thomas Markle.
Kate didn’t deny the situation but did not waver on the dress issue, replying, “And the wedding’s in four days.”
As the conversation continued, Meghan reiterated that Ajay was available for alterations, telling Kate, “I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit then please take Charlotte to see Ajay. He’s been waiting all day.”
Kate finally gave in, replying only with a short ‘fine.’
The argument did not end with a resolution, leaving Meghan upset to the point where Prince Harry remembers coming home to find her sobbing on the floor.
Months later, the tabloids reported a completely different version of events, saying Meghan made Kate cry.

The palace did not challenge this false narrative, and Meghan received widespread public criticism.

But a bombshell new revelation came when Harry revealed details of a December 2018 meeting the four royals had behind closed doors.
The conversation began with Kate apparently admitting the truth to Meghan, saying: “I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry.”
Yet, there was no word from the media to correct the damaging reports.
Kate seemed to Harry ‘flustered’ and Prince William to give “supportive-sounding evasions.”
That was then followed by another shocking moment after the Sussexes questioned who leaked the false story in the first place.
In his article, Harry writes that after much discussion, William eventually admitted he ‘might’ve’ told King Charles III and Queen Camilla about the argument.
The revelation stunned Meghan and Harry; the prince recalled, “I put my hand over my face. Meg froze. A heavy silence fell. So now we knew.”
Harry was frustrated and confronted his brother: “You of all people should’ve known.”
William nodded, and the meeting was over in silence.

This bombshell revelation completely changes the narrative around the infamous argument in which the truth was kept secret.
Kate’s private admission and Meghan’s constant attempts to correct what actually happened could not undo the damage.
The story raises serious questions about the position of the royal family in the media, the politics of the royal family, and what pressures those are under to marry into it.
Harry’s book has finally given the public a clearer idea of the tensions that simmered behind palace doors.
The question remains, however, as to why the truth was never publicly acknowledged until now.
