South Korean hit Squid Game is back for a second season, and it’s already breaking Netflix records.

Its third season, due in 2025, will conclude the drama’s main storyline.

But the show’s universe still has plenty left to be explored — creator Hwang Dong Hyuk has confirmed plans for multiple spin-off projects.

Squid Game, released to Netflix in 2021, is now a series so widely watched that since its debut it has become Netflix’s most popular ever, with audiences around the world tuning in to watch its tale of contestants risking their lives in brutal games in the hope of winning a huge cash prize..

It is the follow-up on the first season, which was released on December 26, 2024, and follows protagonist Seong Gi-hun as he returns to the deadly competition to earn his way to the top, avenging the sinister organization behind its creation.

Lee Jung Jaes’ Seong Gi Hun will continue the story in Squid Game Season 3, which will wrap up the story of Season 2.

There’s no word on if Lee will appear in future Squid Game projects beyond this season. The show has already made history with the actor, becoming the first Asian to win an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama.

In Season 3, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong Hyuk promised to deliver a definitive ending to Gi Hun’s story, saying: “I felt that through this story, I could express everything I wanted, both through Squid Game and Gi hun’s character.”

The Squid Game franchise will continue to grow, even as the main series wraps up.

“I know Netflix has a plan [for more Squid Game],” Dong-hyuk told The Wrap in an interview. “They are not going to throw this idea away.”

One of these expansions is Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series based on the original show. It’s set to premiere in November 2024, with players trying their hand at game-inspired challenges, minus the life-or-death stakes.

A strong viewership response has spurred a second-season renewal of the series.

And an English language adaptation is apparently in the works, with David Fincher attached to direct.

Details are thin on the ground, but the fact this adaptation exists is part of a wider search by Netflix to find new ground for the franchise.

Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix, and Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

The streaming giant Netflix is now streaming Squid Game Season 2 while Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in 2025.
