Netflix viewers have been left gripped by a psychological thriller that steadily turns up the tension before delivering a series of twists that completely change the story.

What initially appears to be a relatively straightforward mystery quickly develops into something far darker, with questions surrounding murder, grief, obsession and just how well anyone can really know the people living around them.

The series has particularly impressed viewers who enjoy slow-burning thrillers where almost every character appears to have something to hide.

And while some of the developments can be guessed along the way, the show has several moments designed to pull the rug out from underneath the audience.

One particular twist has been singled out by viewers as one of the most memorable parts of the entire story.

Critics have praised the gripping thriller

The series has also received plenty of praise from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently giving it an 85% approval rating from critics.

Its critics’ consensus describes it as being ‘a cut above the usual murder mystery,’ highlighting the tension between its two central characters and the performances from its leading stars.

Metacritic, meanwhile, gave the series a score of 71 out of 100, placing it in the ‘generally favorable’ category.

Several reviews have particularly focused on the performances, with Matthew Rhys attracting significant attention for his unsettling portrayal of a wealthy businessman whose charm can quickly give way to something much more threatening.

CNET awarded the thriller five stars, describing it as reminiscent of the work of Alfred Hitchcock, while another review praised it as a ‘tight and twisty’ thriller driven by its two leads.

The Guardian also called the show ‘top tier.’ The critical response has also been reflected in its awards success.

Matthew Rhys won the 2026 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance.

The series itself also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, while Claire Danes was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress.

Fans say they couldn’t stop watching

Viewers have been similarly enthusiastic, with fans taking to online forums to discuss the show’s increasingly unpredictable storyline.

One viewer described it as a ‘great show.’ particularly praising the eventual twist, while another said they had watched the entire series and found the central performances compelling.

Matthew Rhys has been a particular favourite.

One fan described his performance as ‘next level,’ praising how he managed to make his character simultaneously ‘compelling, alluring, intriguing and terrifying.’

Another viewer said they were impressed by how the series kept them changing their mind about what was really happening.

“I kept flip flopping between Nile being guilty or not,” one fan wrote.

Others praised the atmosphere, music and cinematography, with one viewer saying there was ‘never a boring moment.’

There has, however, been some disagreement among viewers.

Some felt the story became too predictable or melodramatic, while others thought the pacing was too slow.

But even some of the more critical reactions acknowledged that the performances, particularly Rhys’, helped keep the thriller watchable.

That divided response arguably makes the show’s twists even more interesting, because viewers have been debating exactly when they realised what was really going on.

What is the show about?

At the centre of the story is a grieving author who has struggled to write since the death of her young son.

Her life changes when a wealthy and mysterious man moves into the house next door with his second wife.

There is already a dark cloud hanging over the new neighbour.

His first wife disappeared and was presumed dead, while he was suspected of having played a role in what happened to her.

However, there was never enough evidence to charge him.

The author soon becomes fascinated by her new neighbour and decides to write a book about him.

Officially, the project gives him the opportunity to tell his side of the story.

But for her, it also becomes a way of investigating the unanswered questions surrounding his first wife’s disappearance.

As she gets closer to him, however, the boundaries between writer and subject begin to disappear.

Their relationship becomes an increasingly unsettling game of manipulation, curiosity and suspicion.

The situation becomes even more complicated when the man blamed by the author for her son’s death disappears.

From there, the thriller becomes a much bigger mystery involving murder, corruption, the FBI and the wealthy family surrounding the mysterious neighbour.

The story also repeatedly questions whether its central characters are as different from one another as they initially appear.

That psychological element is a major part of what makes the series so gripping.

Rather than simply asking whether one character is guilty, it explores how grief, anger and revenge can bring out darker instincts in almost anyone.

Who is in the cast?

The series is led by Claire Danes, who plays author Aggie Wiggs.

Danes is perhaps best known for starring as Carrie Mathison in Homeland, as well as roles in My So-Called Life, Romeo + Juliet and Fleishman Is in Trouble.

Opposite her is Matthew Rhys, who plays the mysterious Nile Jarvis.

Rhys is known for The Americans, Perry Mason and Brothers & Sisters, and his performance here earned him the Emmy for lead actor.

Brittany Snow plays Nile’s second wife, Nina Jarvis, while Natalie Morales portrays Aggie’s ex-wife Shelley Morris.

The supporting cast includes Jonathan Banks as Nile’s powerful father Martin Jarvis, David Lyons as FBI agent Brian Abbott and Tim Guinee as Nile’s uncle and security chief Rick.

The series was created by Gabe Rotter, with Howard Gordon serving as showrunner.

It was also executive produced by major names including Jodie Foster and Conan O’Brien.

There are eight episodes in the first season, with episodes running for roughly 41 to 54 minutes.

And despite initially being presented as a limited series, Netflix renewed the thriller for a second season in September 2026.

So, what is the Netflix thriller?

The series keeping viewers hooked is The Beast in Me.

Released on Netflix in November 2025, the psychological crime thriller follows Aggie as she becomes increasingly entangled with her mysterious neighbour Nile.

The story builds slowly before unleashing a succession of increasingly disturbing revelations, including one major twist that dramatically changes Aggie’s situation.

For anyone who enjoys murder mysteries, unreliable characters and psychological cat-and-mouse games, it is easy to see why the series has continued to attract attention.

And with a second season now confirmed, fans who thought the story had reached its conclusion may have plenty more twists to look forward to.
