A US man discovered his biological father was a famous musician almost 60 years after being adopted.

Michael Goessling always knew he was adopted, but it wasn’t until his late fifties that he finally met his biological mother and discovered the extraordinary identity of his father.

Goessling had spent decades wondering about his biological parents, until a DNA match through 23andMe led to the revelation that his father was a five-time Grammy Award winner.

Goessling grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, after being adopted by a couple named Kay and Paul.

He credits his adoptive parents with giving him a wonderful childhood, but that didn’t stop his curiosity about his biological family.

The remarkable discovery has left readers stunned, with many describing it as one of the most heartwarming stories they’ve come across.

“There is such a strong resemblance!” one person exclaimed.

Another commented: “Coolest story ever.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “Wow that would be exciting to know you are a child of a star! Now that would be life changing for sure.”

Shocking family discoveries in Hollywood

But he’s not the only person to discover an unexpected celebrity connection later in life.

Actress Liv Tyler grew up believing musician Todd Rundgren was her biological father before discovering she was the daughter of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.

Liv recalled attending an Aerosmith concert as a child when she noticed a striking resemblance between herself and a girl standing at the side of the stage.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, she explained that the girl was Mia Tyler, who she later discovered was her half-sister.

The resemblance was so striking that Liv compared the experience to looking at her twin.

She recalled looking at her mother, singer and former Playboy model Bebe Buell, and seeing tears in her eyes. It was then that she began to piece together the truth.

Reflecting on the discovery in an interview with The Guardian, Liv described learning Steven was her father as an almost spiritual experience.

For Goessling, the discovery of his own famous father came through an equally unexpected series of events.

The DNA test that changed everything

According to CNN, Goessling originally registered with DNA testing company 23andMe around 15 years before the discovery to investigate whether he had inherited any medical conditions from his biological parents.

Although the test didn’t reveal any concerning health issues, he decided to leave his account active.

That decision would eventually change his life.

In 2025, Goessling’s previously unknown half-brother, Dylan, also used 23andMe and discovered they were related.

Dylan and his sister Scarlett had known their father had another son who had been placed for adoption.

The DNA match finally provided a way for the family to reconnect.

In May 2025, Goessling received a letter through his biological mother’s attorney asking whether he would be interested in making contact.

He spoke to his birth mother over the phone and arranged to meet her.

It marked the beginning of an extraordinary family reunion, almost six decades in the making.

A phone call that changed everything

Intrigued by the identity of his biological father, Goessling spoke to him over the phone and could hardly believe who was on the other end.

During their conversation, the musician revealed that he would be performing in Goessling’s hometown of St. Louis later that year.

There was something strangely familiar about the man’s distinctive voice.

Curious, Goessling searched for musicians scheduled to perform in the city.

To his amazement, he discovered that multi-platinum rock band The Doobie Brothers were due to appear.

As the pieces of the puzzle came together, Goessling finally realized his father was none other than Michael McDonald.

“Are you Michael McDonald?” Goessling recalled asking during an interview with First Alert 4.

“Yeah, I’m afraid so,” McDonald replied.

The discovery was even more extraordinary because Goessling had been a lifelong fan of The Doobie Brothers.

He had even seen the band perform live twice without knowing that the musician on stage was his biological father.

Speaking to Fox News, Goessling admitted that he initially thought someone was playing a prank on him.

Who are the Doobie Brothers?

The Doobie Brothers rose to fame during the 1970s, becoming known for their distinctive blend of rock, soul and other musical influences.

Their biggest hits include What a Fool Believes, Black Water and Takin’ It to the Streets.

Michael McDonald joined the group in 1975, bringing his distinctive soulful voice and keyboard skills to the band.

He quickly became a significant part of their sound, contributing to some of their best-known recordings.

The song Takin’ It to the Streets, which McDonald wrote, became the title track of the group’s 1976 album.

McDonald later left the band in 1982 to pursue a solo career, releasing songs including I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).

Throughout his career, he has won five Grammy Awards and worked with numerous other major recording artists.

His musical achievements made Goessling’s discovery all the more remarkable.

As Goessling explained to CNN, he had been a huge fan of The Doobie Brothers since childhood and had grown up listening to their music.

An emotional family reunion

Following their initial phone conversation, Goessling and McDonald eventually met in person.

Recalling their first meeting to First Alert 4, Goessling described how his father welcomed him with a hug and told him he loved him.

It was an emotional moment for both men, who had spent almost six decades apart.

Goessling also told his father how much his music had meant to him growing up.

For McDonald, the reunion brought relief after years of wondering what had happened to the son he had placed for adoption as a teenager.

He explained that he and Goessling’s biological mother had frequently wondered whether their son had enjoyed a happy life.

The reunion also brought another unexpected surprise: McDonald discovered he was a grandfather.

He has since spoken warmly about Goessling’s family, including his daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

Fans react to the incredible discovery

The extraordinary revelation has captured the hearts of readers, with many struggling to believe just how famous his biological father turned out to be.

“Can you imagine finding out that Michael McDonald is your biological father? That is like the Holy Grail of all Holy Grails,” one person wrote.

Another exclaimed: “Not just a rock star…freakin Michael McDonald!!”

Others couldn’t get over the striking family resemblance, with one wondering: “I wonder how many times he heard he looks like Michael McDonald, because he does look like his father.”

A second agreed: “Because he never looked in the mirror? They’re twins!!”

However, it wasn’t just the celebrity connection that resonated with readers, with many particularly moved by the family’s emotional reunion.

One person recalled: “When I read about the first time they met personally, when Michael McDonald spread his arms out and gave his son a big bear hug and told him that he loved him, that brought tears to my eyes. Still does.”

Another added: “Glad that all got to meet each other and have time together.”

For many, the story was a touching reminder that discovering your biological family can bring unexpected happiness, even decades later.

Despite his own fame and success, McDonald was keen to recognize the people who had raised his son.

Speaking to First Alert 4, the musician praised Goessling’s adoptive parents, crediting them with providing the love and security his son needed growing up.

McDonald described Kay and Paul as the real stars of the extraordinary family story.

For him, discovering that his son had enjoyed a loving childhood was an enormous comfort.

And perhaps the most remarkable coincidence of all was that Goessling’s adoptive parents had unknowingly named him Michael – the very same first name as his biological father.

Decades later, the two Michaels finally had the opportunity to get to know each other.
